- How many cards are in Belote?
- Belote uses 32 cards: the 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace of each suit. Each of the four players ends up with eight cards. In Classic Belote they arrive in two stages, five first and three after trump is chosen, while in Coinche all eight are dealt at once.
- What is Belote Rebelote?
- Belote Rebelote is the King and Queen of trump held by the same player, worth 20 points. You say "Belote" when you play the first of the two and "Rebelote" when you play the second. The 20 points always stay with the team that holds the pair, even if that team fails its contract.
- How much is the 9 of trump worth in Belote?
- The 9 of trump is worth 14 points and is the second highest trump, beaten only by the Jack of trump, which is worth 20. Outside the trump suit a 9 is worth nothing and ranks below the 10, King, Queen and Jack. Knowing where the trump 9 is often decides a deal.
- What is the highest card in Belote?
- The Jack of trump is the highest card in Belote and is worth 20 points. After it come the 9 of trump (14), Ace (11), 10 (10), King (4), Queen (3), 8 and 7. In the plain suits the Ace is the highest card, followed by the 10, King, Queen, Jack, 9, 8 and 7.
- What is dix de der in Belote?
- Dix de der means "ten for the last": the team that wins the eighth and final trick earns 10 extra points. Together with the 152 card points in the deck, that makes 162 points in every deal. It is a good reason to keep a sure winner for the end of a close deal.
- What is capot in Belote?
- Capot means one team has won all eight tricks of a deal. In Classic Belote a capot is worth 250 points instead of the usual 162. In Coinche you can also bid Capot as a contract worth 250, but you then have to win every single trick to make it.
- What does coinche mean?
- Coinche is a double. In the Coinche (Contrée) version of Belote, an opponent of the highest bidder can say coinche to challenge the contract, and the winning side then scores 160 plus twice the bid. The bidder can reply with surcoinche, a redouble, which makes it 160 plus four times the bid.
- What is the difference between Belote and Coinche?
- The difference is how trump is chosen. In Classic Belote a card is turned face up and players take that suit or name another one. In Coinche there is an auction: players bid a number of points from 80 to 160, or Capot, with a trump suit, and the opponents can double with a coinche. Card values and play are the same.
- Is Contrée the same as Coinche?
- Yes. Contrée is the name used in parts of southern France for the same bidding game, and belote coinchée and belote contrée mean the same thing too. On our site you choose it as the Coinche mode, and both names describe the auction with bids from 80 to 160 and the double called coinche.
- How many points do you need to win Belote?
- You choose the target before the match. Classic Belote is played to 501 or 1000 points, and Coinche to 1000 or 2000 points. Scores add up deal by deal, and once a team reaches the target the team with the highest total wins the match.
- What happens if the taker fails in Belote?
- If the taking team does not score more than the defenders, the contract fails (dedans or chute). In Classic Belote the defenders then score all 162 points plus all declarations, and the takers keep only their belote rebelote if they held it. In Coinche the defenders score 160 plus the bid.
- Do I have to trump in Belote if my partner is winning?
- No. If you cannot follow suit and your partner is currently winning the trick, you may play any card. If your partner is not winning, you must trump, and overtrump an opponent's trump if you can. Our game highlights your legal cards, so you can see the rule in action.
- Can I play Belote with friends online?
- Yes. Tap Invite friends to open a room with a six-character code and a share link, then send it on WhatsApp or copy it. Friends join in their browser on a phone or computer, with no app and no account. Computers fill any empty seats, so two or three people can play too.
- Can I play Belote against the computer?
- Yes. Choose Easy, Normal or Hard. Easy computers make mistakes, Normal ones play solid cards, and Hard computers track every card, work out who is void in which suit and simulate possible deals before each play. Your match is saved automatically, so you can come back to it later.
