Bubble Shooter: complete guide

Bubble Shooter is the classic bubble pop game: aim, bounce your shot off the walls, match three or more bubbles of the same colour and bring the rest tumbling down. You can play Bubble Shooter online free right here, with no download, 60 hand-checked levels, boss boards, power-ups and an endless mode for a high score.

How to play Bubble Shooter

A packed field of coloured bubbles hangs from the ceiling. At the bottom sits your shooter, loaded with one bubble. You aim, fire, and the bubble flies in a straight line until it hits the ceiling or another bubble and sticks there. If it lands next to two or more bubbles of the same colour, the whole group of three or more pops.

That is the entire rule set, and it is why the bubble shooter classic style has lasted for decades. A round is won when every coloured bubble on the board is gone. It is lost when bubbles reach the red danger line above your shooter.

  • Mouse: move to aim, click to fire.
  • Touch: drag to aim, release to fire.
  • Keyboard: Left and Right arrows aim, Space, Enter or Up fire.
  • Swap the loaded bubble with the next one by tapping it, or by pressing S or X.
  • Number keys 1, 2 and 3 arm your power-ups. P or Esc pauses, M mutes and R restarts the level.

The board: a hex grid of bubbles

The board is a hexagonal grid, 11 bubbles wide. Rows alternate between 11 and 10 bubbles, so every row sits half a bubble to the side of the one above. That offset is why a bubble touches up to six neighbours, and why a shot can sit in a pocket you would not expect on a square grid.

The shooter only ever loads colours that are still on the board. If you have cleared every green bubble, you will never be handed a green one. That keeps the late game fair and means you can never be stuck with a bubble that cannot match anything.

How to aim and make bank shots

A dotted guide line shows exactly where your shot will travel, including where it bounces off the side walls. Use it. Almost every hard board in the game is solved by a bank shot, which is a bounce off the left or right wall to reach a spot you cannot hit directly.

The wall bounce works like light off a mirror: the angle in equals the angle out. If a column of bubbles blocks the straight path, aim at the wall on the far side and let the shot ricochet into the gap. Small movements matter. On a phone, drag slowly and watch the dots settle before you release. On a keyboard, tap the arrow keys one press at a time for fine adjustments.

Where your bubble lands also matters. A bubble that touches a group will snap into the nearest free slot on the hex grid. Aiming at the lower edge of a group usually sticks to it; aiming at the side of a gap can tuck a bubble into a pocket that would otherwise stay empty.

Before every shot, find the bubble that is holding up the most others. Cutting it off from the ceiling clears the most bubbles with the fewest shots.

Why bubbles drop: the ceiling rule

Here is the rule that makes bubble pop games clever. Any bubble that is no longer connected to the ceiling, directly or through a chain of other bubbles, falls off the board. Those dropped bubbles count too, and they score more than bubbles you pop.

So the best shots do not just match colours. They pop the bubbles that hold a whole hanging cluster in place. When you see a big group of mixed colours hanging by a single thread of bubbles, popping that thread sends the lot down at once. Lose track of this rule and the board feels slow; use it and levels melt away in a few shots.

Bubble Shooter levels and the six packs

The game has 60 levels in 6 packs of 10: Meadow, Lagoon, Orchard, Dunes, Frost and Volcano. Levels unlock in order, and your progress and stars are saved in this browser, so you can close the tab and carry on later.

The early packs use only 3 colours, which makes them a gentle way to learn aiming. New colours arrive as you go, up to 6 colours by the fifth pack. More colours means fewer lucky matches, so you have to think about where each bubble goes instead of firing at the nearest group.

Every level was cleared by an automatic bot in testing, so there are no unwinnable boards. If a level feels impossible, a different plan will work, and the usual answer is a better bank shot or a better cut.

Boss boards

Levels 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 are the boss boards. Each one is a large shaped board: a heart, a star, a diamond, a crown, a moon and a flame. They are shielded with grey stone bubbles, and they are the biggest test of each pack.

To win a level you clear every coloured bubble. Any stones left over fall away on their own once nothing holds them, so you never need to clear them directly.

Stone bubbles and how to clear them

Stone bubbles are grey and cannot be matched. Shooting colours at them does nothing on its own. The only normal way to remove a stone is to cut it off from the ceiling, so it drops with everything else that was hanging from it.

That means you clear stones by working on the coloured bubbles that support them. Dig a channel through the coloured bubbles above a stone, pop the last link, and the stone falls. A bomb or a fireball will also destroy stones directly, which is worth remembering when a boss board is blocked.

Ceiling drops and the danger line

If you fire several shots in a row that pop nothing, a new row of bubbles is pushed in from the top. In the first pack that happens after 6 such shots. By the sixth pack it is only 4. A row of small pips shows how close the next drop is, so you can plan around it.

If bubbles reach the red danger line, the level is lost. The cure is simple: make every shot count. A shot that only adds to the pile is a shot that brings the ceiling closer. When the pip meter is nearly full, pick a safe pop even if it is not the cleverest cut.

Power-ups: Rainbow, Fireball and Bomb

You earn power-ups by playing well, and you can hold up to 3 of each. Arm one with the number keys 1, 2 or 3, or tap it on a phone, then fire as normal.

  • Rainbow: earned with 3 popping shots in a row. The rainbow bubble becomes whichever colour makes the biggest match where it lands.
  • Fireball: earned with 5 popping shots in a row, after which the streak resets. It burns straight through up to 8 bubbles on its path, stones included.
  • Bomb: earned by one shot that clears 10 or more bubbles, counting pops and drops together. It clears the bubble it hits and its six neighbours, stones included.

Scoring and stars

Each popped bubble is worth 10 points and each dropped bubble is worth 25, multiplied up by your combo streak. A long run of popping shots is worth far more than the same pops spread over a slow level.

Each level also awards 1 to 3 stars depending on how many shots you used compared with a par for that level. Stars never lock anything, so you can move on and return to improve a score later.

Endless mode: bubble shooter unlimited

If you want to play for a score instead of a level, try endless mode. There is no level limit. Rows keep arriving, the colours rise from 4 to 6, and the ceiling drops faster as your score climbs. Power-ups carry through the run, so a good streak early pays off later.

Your best score is saved and submitted to the leaderboard. Endless mode rewards patience: clean, safe pops build the streak that earns Fireballs and Bombs, and those are what let you survive when the speed picks up.

Accessibility, sound and settings

There is a colour-blind option that gives each colour its own shape symbol: circle, triangle, square, diamond, star and cross. You can tell bubbles apart without relying on hue alone.

Sound effects are made in the browser, with no audio files to download, and you can mute them with the M key or the mute button. Phones that support it add a small vibration on pops. If your device asks for reduced motion, the game tones down screen shake and particles.

Bubble Shooter vs Puzzle Bobble

Puzzle Bobble, known as Bust a Move in some countries, is the arcade game that made this style famous. Bubble Shooter is the browser version of the same idea: shoot, match three, drop the rest. The basic loop is identical.

What differs is the packaging. Here you get a dotted aiming guide, a swap button, 60 levels with stars, power-ups from combos and an endless mode, all free in your browser with no download and no sign-up. If you enjoyed puzzle bobble online, you will feel at home within one shot.

Bubble Shooter tips and strategy

A handful of habits separate a three-star player from a beginner.

  • Look for the hanging cluster before you look for a colour match.
  • Work down one side of the board so you do not leave awkward holes in the middle.
  • Use the swap to save a useful colour for the next shot instead of wasting it.
  • Keep an eye on the pip meter and never make a non-popping shot when it is close to full.
  • Save Bombs and Fireballs for stone-heavy boss boards or for emergencies near the danger line.
  • On boss boards, aim for the supports under the stones rather than the stones.
