Neon Snake Arena: complete guide

Neon Snake Arena is snake with the walls closing in. You eat glowing orbs to grow and chain them into combos while the arena shrinks one ring at a time, and every wave you clear brings the walls back out, a faster snake, bouncing sparks and finally a rival snake racing you for food. Play it free in your browser with five power-ups, a calmer Classic Neon mode and a daily arena that is the same for everyone.

How to play Neon Snake Arena

You steer a glowing snake around a square arena. It never stops moving, so your only job is choosing when to turn. Eat orbs to grow longer and score points, and keep your head away from the walls, your own tail and anything dangerous.

  • Each orb adds one segment to your snake and is worth 10 points times your combo.
  • Running into the wall or into your own body ends the run, unless a power-up says otherwise.
  • In Arena mode the wall closes in by one ring after every 4 orbs or every 20 seconds, whichever comes first.
  • Before the wall moves, the ring that is about to close flashes yellow for 2 seconds. Get your head inside the dashed line before it shuts.
  • Once the arena is at its smallest size, one more ring clears the wave. You get a bonus, the arena opens back up to full size and your snake speeds up.

Controls on computer and phone

On a keyboard, use the arrow keys or W, A, S and D. The game remembers up to two turns ahead, so you can press Up then Left quickly to make a tight zig-zag and both turns will happen on the next two moves. A turn straight back into your own neck is ignored rather than killing you. P or Escape pauses, and Space or Enter starts a new run.

On a phone or tablet, swipe anywhere on the arena in the direction you want to go. You do not need to lift your finger between swipes: keep dragging and turn again. If you prefer buttons, tap the gamepad icon at the top (or the D-pad switch on the start screen) to show a big on-screen D-pad under the arena.

The game pauses by itself if you switch tabs or apps, so a phone call never costs you a run. Movement runs on a fixed 60 steps per second clock and is drawn smoothly between cells, so the snake glides instead of jumping and feels the same on fast and slow screens.

Combos and scoring

Speed is where the big scores are. When you eat an orb, a yellow bar under your score starts to drain over 3 seconds. Eat another orb before it runs out and your combo goes up by one. Each orb scores 10 times the combo, so the third orb in a fast chain is worth 30 and the tenth is worth 100. The multiplier tops out at 10. If the bar empties, the combo resets and the next orb starts again at 10 points.

Two orbs are always on the floor, so a good route takes one and swings straight into the next. Other points come from power-ups, which are worth 25 each when you pick them up, and from clearing a wave, which pays 250 times the wave number. Your score, the wave you reached, your longest length and your best combo are shown at the end of every run, and your best for each mode is saved in this browser.

Power-ups

Every 8 to 13 seconds a power-up token appears on the floor. It stays for 9 seconds and starts to blink when it is about to vanish. When you collect one, it shows up under the arena with a bar that drains as it wears off. Each one has its own colour, icon and sound.

  • Phase (green, ghost): for 6 seconds you can pass straight through your own tail. Walls, sparks and the rival still count.
  • Slow-mo (blue, hourglass): for 5 seconds everything in the arena moves 40% slower, including you. Timers do not slow down, so use it to thread through tight spots, not to wait out the wall.
  • Magnet (red, magnet): for 7 seconds any orb within 6 cells drifts toward your head, one cell at a time, and is eaten when it reaches you. Great for keeping a combo alive.
  • Shrink (cream, scissors): instantly cuts 30% off the end of your tail. It only appears once your snake is at least 8 long, and it is a lifesaver in a small arena.
  • Double (yellow, x2): for 8 seconds every orb is worth twice as much. Stack it with a high combo for huge numbers.

Waves, sparks and the rival snake

Wave 1 is just you, the orbs and the shrinking wall. From wave 2, sparks appear: spiky red mines that drift across the arena and bounce off the walls and off your body. They blink for about a second when they first appear and cannot hurt you yet; after that, touching one with your head ends the run. Wave 2 has one spark, wave 3 has two and so on up to four.

From wave 3, a blue rival snake joins in. It hunts the nearest orb, avoids walls and tries to stay away from your head. If the two of you meet head-on, both snakes die and the run is over. If its head hits your body, the rival dies and drops a trail of orbs you can collect, and a new rival comes back after 8 seconds. Your head hitting its body is fatal for you, so the trick is to cut across its path with your body and let it crash.

When the wall closes on a ring, anything outside the new wall is lost. If your head is outside, you are crushed. If only part of your tail is still outside, that part is sliced off and you keep playing with a shorter snake. Orbs and power-ups caught outside disappear and new ones appear inside.

Modes and the daily arena

Arena is the full game with shrinking walls, waves, sparks and the rival. Classic Neon keeps the neon look and the power-ups but drops the wall, the waves and the hazards, so it plays like a calmer classic snake where the snake slowly speeds up as it grows. Daily arena uses Arena rules, but every orb, power-up and spark comes from a seed picked by the date, so everyone who plays today gets the same spawns. Clear wave 1 in the daily arena to complete it on the Daily Challenges page; your best daily score for each day is saved too.

Tips to survive longer

The wall forces you toward the middle, and the middle gets crowded. These habits help.

  • Live near the centre. When the yellow warning starts, a snake already in the middle has nothing to do, while a snake hugging the edge has to scramble.
  • Watch the progress bar under the wave counter. When it is nearly full, finish your current orb and head inward before the warning even starts.
  • Do not chase every combo. A dropped combo costs a few points; a panicked turn into your tail costs the whole run.
  • Save Shrink for later waves. A long snake in a 13 by 13 arena is the biggest danger in the game.
  • Use your body as a wall against the rival. Swing across its path and let it run into you; you get its orbs for free.
  • Sparks move in straight lines and only change direction when they bounce. Look at where a spark is heading, not where it is.
  • Queue your turns. Pressing two directions quickly is how experienced players make U-turns in a single cell gap.

How many players can play Neon Snake Arena?
It is a single-player game.
How long does a game of Neon Snake Arena take?
A round takes about 4 minutes. It is rated medium and sits in our Arcade collection.
How is Neon Snake Arena different from classic snake?
The arena shrinks. Every few orbs, or every 20 seconds, the wall closes in by one ring after a 2 second warning. Clearing the smallest arena wins the wave, and later waves add bouncing sparks and a rival snake that competes for food. There are also five timed power-ups and a combo system that rewards eating fast. If you want the plain game, Classic Neon mode switches the shrinking wall and hazards off.
What happens if my tail is outside when the wall closes?
Only your head has to be inside. Any part of your tail still outside the new wall is sliced off and you carry on with a shorter snake. If your head is outside when the wall shuts, the run ends.
How does the combo work?
Eat an orb within 3 seconds of the previous one and your combo grows by one. Each orb is worth 10 points times the combo, up to 10 times. The yellow bar under your score shows how much time is left before the combo resets.
Can I play Neon Snake Arena on my phone?
Yes. Swipe on the arena to turn, without lifting your finger if you like, or switch on the on-screen D-pad with the gamepad button. The game pauses on its own when you leave the tab or app.
Is the daily arena the same for everyone?
Yes. The daily arena uses a seed made from the date, so orbs, power-ups and sparks appear in the same places in the same order for every player, as long as you take the same path. Clear wave 1 to complete the daily challenge.
What happens when I crash into the rival snake?
If both heads meet, both snakes die and your run ends. If your head hits the rival's body, you lose. If the rival's head hits your body, it dies and leaves a trail of orbs behind for you.
