Bhabhi rules: how to play Thulla, step by step

Everything you need to sit down at a Bhabhi table: the deal, following suit, the thulla, who picks up the pile and how the last player holding cards becomes the Bhabhi.

The idea in one sentence

Bhabhi is a shedding game played with tricks: you want to get rid of every card in your hand, and the one player still holding cards at the very end is the Bhabhi and loses. Nobody wins points, nobody counts tricks. You are simply trying not to be last.

That makes it different from most trick games people know. In Rung (Court Piece) you want to win tricks. In Bhabhi a trick that goes round quietly is good news for everyone, and the danger comes from a single move called the thulla. The rules below are exactly the ones used by our free online Bhabhi game, with its default house rules switched on.

Players, cards and the deal

You need 3 to 6 players and one standard 52-card deck with the jokers taken out. Four or five players is the most common at home. On PlayNest the computer fills any empty seat, so you can play a full table alone or with just one or two friends.

Deal the whole deck one card at a time round the table until it runs out. Hands are not always equal, and that is fine. With 4 players everyone gets 13 cards. With 3 players one person gets 18 and the other two get 17. With 5 players two people get 11 and three get 10. With 6 players four people get 9 and two get 8.

Cards rank Ace high, then King, Queen, Jack, 10 and so on down to 2. There is no trump suit and the four suits are equal. Sort your hand by suit as soon as it is dealt, because the whole game is about which suits you hold and which you have run out of.

Starting the game: the Ace of Spades

Whoever holds the Ace of Spades leads it to start the very first trick. Everyone else then plays a card in turn. Play passes round the table one seat at a time.

With our default rules the first trick is also free. If somebody cannot follow suit on trick one, nobody picks anything up. The whole trick is set aside face down and the player with the highest spade leads the next trick. This gives everybody one gentle round before the real game starts. Some families treat the first trick like any other, and you can play that way too; see Bhabhi house rules and variants.

Following suit and a clean trick

The first card of each trick sets the suit. Every other player must play a card of that same suit if they have one. You may play any card of the suit, high or low, but you cannot hold it back and throw something else.

If everyone follows suit, the trick is clean. The cards are turned face down and put aside for good; they never come back into the game. The player who played the highest card of the led suit leads the next trick with any card they like.

  • Example: Asma leads the 6 of hearts. Bilal plays the Jack of hearts, Hina plays the 3 of hearts and Danish plays the 9 of hearts.
  • Everyone followed, so the four cards are thrown away.
  • Bilal's Jack was the highest heart, so Bilal leads the next trick.

The thulla: what happens when you cannot follow

If you have no card of the suit that was led, you may play any card from any suit. That move is the thulla, and it changes everything. The trick stops at once. Players who have not yet played do not add a card.

The player whose card is currently the highest of the led suit must pick up the whole trick, including the thulla card, and put it into their hand. That same player then leads the next trick.

  • Example: Asma leads the 10 of clubs. Bilal plays the King of clubs. Hina has no clubs and throws the 4 of diamonds.
  • That is a thulla. Danish does not play.
  • Bilal's King is the highest club, so Bilal picks up the 10 of clubs, the King of clubs and the 4 of diamonds, and leads next.

Tip

The player who throws the thulla never picks up. It is always the holder of the highest card in the led suit, which is why being on top of a trick is risky while others still have to play.

Who leads next

After a clean trick, the highest card of the led suit leads. After a thulla, the player who picked up leads. If the player who should lead has just played their last card and escaped, the lead passes to the next player round the table who still has cards.

The leader can start any suit. Choosing that suit well is a big part of playing well, and our Bhabhi strategy guide covers it in detail.

Getting out and becoming the Bhabhi

When your hand is empty you are out and safe. The game shows your finishing place, first out, second out and so on, and play continues among everybody else. Two players can run out in the same trick; both are safe, placed in the order they played.

The game ends when only one player still holds cards. That player is the Bhabhi. There is no score to add up. One game gives one loser, and in most homes the next deal starts straight away.

One rare ending is worth knowing. If the very last trick is clean and it empties every remaining hand at the same moment, the player who played the highest card of that trick is the Bhabhi. Dropping your top card last is not always as safe as it looks.

Quick rules summary

If you only remember one part of this page, remember this list.

  • 3 to 6 players, 52 cards, all cards dealt.
  • Ace of Spades leads the first trick; the first trick is free by default.
  • Follow the led suit if you can.
  • Everyone followed: the trick is thrown away, highest card leads.
  • Someone could not follow: that is a thulla, the trick stops and the highest card of the led suit picks up everything and leads.
  • Empty hand: you are safe.
  • Last player with cards: the Bhabhi.

Questions people ask

Who picks up the cards after a thulla?
The player who played the highest card of the suit that was led. Not the player who threw the thulla. The one who picks up also leads the next trick.
Is Bhabhi the same game as Thulla?
Yes. Bhabhi is the name for the loser and for the game, and thulla is its most famous move. Many families call the whole game Thulla or Bhabhi Thulla. In English a very similar game is called Getaway.
Can I throw a thulla if I still have the led suit?
No. You must follow suit whenever you can. A thulla is only allowed when you have no card of the led suit left in your hand.
How many cards does each player get in Bhabhi?
The whole deck is dealt, so it depends on the number of players: 13 each with four players, 17 or 18 with three, 10 or 11 with five, and 8 or 9 with six.
